South Africa’s beautiful beaches and exciting wildlife will blow you away. I am passionate about African wildlife and marine ecosystems so I want nothing more than to showcase the incredible diversity of this special country. This itinerary has been carefully designed to give you the most of this beautiful country, particularly its natural treasures. South Africa is the only place in the world where it is possible to see the Big Seven – lion, buffalo, leopard, elephant, rhino, great white sharks and southern-right whales…This tour will give you the opportunity to see them all! We start in the “Friendly City” of Port Elizabeth and make our way to Cape Town along the scenic Garden Route. Along the way, we will experience a thrilling Big Five safari, explore ancient forests and traverse the magnificent coastline in search of marine creatures. On this trip we will be staying in eco-friendly lodges and guesthouses and enjoy proudly South African cuisine. Join me on a journey of natural discovery while you rejuvenate your soul.

Itinerary

Day 1

Molweni! Hello! Welcome to sunny South Africa! I will personally collect you from the Port Elizabeth International Airport. If you arrive early, why not visit one of Port Elizabeth’s Blue Flag beaches or sip a cocktail overlooking the beautiful Shark Rock pier. Once everyone is checked in to our cosy guesthouse, we will spend the evening together at a great local restaurant, sharing a glass of wine or two with new friends. Meals: None

Day 2 and 3

After a hearty breakfast, we head to Amakhala Private Game Reserve for a two day Big Five safari. You will love the safari experience! Woodbury Tented Camp consists of eight large comfortable en-suite tents all on raised bases, each with their own private decks other. Each tent has hot running water and electricity, along with all of the amenities required to make your stay comfortable. Camp life is centered around the thatch and canvas main dining and lounge area, with its expansive deck overlooking the Woodbury plain and waterhole. A wide variety of game species such as zebra, giraffe, buffalo and elephant fill the passing parade, while fish eagles soar overhead with their hauntingly call echoing across the valley. Game drives depart directly from camp twice daily (early morning and late afternoon) and are guided by experienced rangers. These safaris are sure to give you the best possible chance to see a variety of wildlife whilst sharing the knowledge that these dedicated guides have built up over the years. You will have great opportunities to take magnificent photos of the roaming elephants, giraffes and a myriad of other special species of wildlife. (B|L|D)

Day 4

After our last wild safari and bush-breakfast we bid farewell to our wonderful hosts at Amakhala. Today we head to the world famous Garden Route! Once we arrive in Tsitsikamma, marvel at the huge yellowwood trees and prolific bird life in this treasured National Park. Explore the treetops by doing an exciting zipline tour. Tonight we will sleep at a gorgeous river lodge. There will be some free time before dinner to relax by the pool or read that novel you’ve been putting off. (B)

Day 5

Today you have a few adventurous options. It’s the perfect time of year to go on a dolphin and whale watching boat cruise from Plettenberg Bay. Get your camera ready for incredible sightings of bottlenose dolphins, Southern-right whales, humpback whales, Cape fur seals and many species of seabirds. Afterwards we will head back to the lodge to freshen up and prepare for a free afternoon. We could head to a vineyard for a relaxing lunch or If you are looking for a more physically challenging adventure, why not go abseiling down a waterfall? If you would prefer to relax, why not indulge in luxurious spa treatments. You could also opt for some alone time; it’s up to you. There are canoes at the lodge that can be used free of charge if you’d like to explore the river. We will have cocktails and dinner at a beach restaurant that’s popular with locals. (B)

Day 6

After a lovely breakfast on the deck overlooking the river we continue our adventure. We will stop at the best little cafés and shops in Knysna for your shopping fix and take in the wonderful views in Wilderness. Thereafter we will head inland to the Karoo town of Oudtshoorn. This semi-desert area is renowned for its scenic landscapes, tranquility, and wonderful hospitality. It is also the ostrich capital of the world! Depending on our time of arrival, you could visit an ostrich farm to experience it first-hand. Tonight we will stay in a typical Karoo-style farmhouse and go out for dinner to an excellent restaurant in this charming town. (B)

Day 7

This morning we will rise extra-early to experience something really special…we will join a meerkat mob during their morning routine. We will see these comical creatures absorb some morning sun on their bellies and watch as they go about their morning rituals. There will be fantastic photo opportunities to capture their true characters. After a well-deserved breakfast back at the farmhouse, we will travel along the famous Route 62 and head back to the Southern Cape coast. We will stop at quaint and quirky café’s and enjoy the stunning scenery along the way. The De Hoop reserve is a World Heritage Site and is one of the best land-based whale watching areas in the world. Southern right and the mighty humpback whales come so close to the shoreline that you can relax on the un-spoilt sand dunes and watch in awe as these beautiful creatures calve, blow, breach and belly-flop. Your accommodation for the next two nights is a traditional fishing-village-style cottage. Meals: (B|D)

Day 8

The De Hoop Reserve is rich in birdlife (over 260 species occur here). This morning, after breakfast we will go on a scenic *guided hike among endemic fynbos to view one of the birding gems, the Cape vulture. They boast an impressive wingspan of 2.5 meters! Enjoy a picnic lunch with a fabulous view over the reserve. There will be time if you need to recharge with a *full body massage. This afternoon we will venture out onto the lagoon for a sunset boat cruise to spot more birds and game species, maybe even a Cape clawless otter. After yet another feast, if the weather permits, we will do some star gazing under the clear African night sky. (B|D)

Day 9: De Hoop Coastal Reserve – Cape Town

This morning we bid farewell to the whales and proteas and take the scenic back-roads through the southern Cape to the Mother City. We will stop in a picturesque seaside village to view a blow hole and coastal caves as well as visit the southern-most tip of Africa. We continue our journey through charming towns like Bredasdorp, stopping at great little shops and wine farms along the way. Look out for graceful blue cranes, the national bird of South Africa, which inhabit the area. Tonight we will sleep in a charming guesthouse at the base of Table Mountain. (B)

Day 10

This morning we will head out on an amazing walking food tour of Cape Town city centre. Learn more about South African history, the people and culture through its food! The Bo-Kaap is just beautiful and the heart of the Cape-Malay community. Sample fresh samoosas, traditional breads and cheeses. Gain more insight into traditional South African ”soul food”. There most definitely will be desert, South Africans have a serious sweet tooth! With our bellies sufficiently full, we head up Table Mountain to watch the sunset over the Mother City. This evening can be spent at your leisure at the V&A Waterfront, but I doubt you will be hungry enough to need dinner! (B|L)

Day 11

Today we will spend the entire day visiting wine farms throughout the world renowned Stellenbosch region. We will visit iconic estates but also the hidden gems only known to locals. We will be doing various food and wine pairings (including cheese and chocolate, yummy!) and learn what runner ducks have to do with wine production. Lunch is included at one of the estates as well as a cellar tour and vineyard tour.  (B|L)

Day 12

This morning, after breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport. If you are prolonging your stay, you will be dropped off at your hotel in the city centre. We hope to see you in South Africa again soon! (B)
